Areola restoration

The last step of a long journey, done quietly and done properly.

What it is

Areola restoration is paramedical tattooing that recreates the colour, shape and appearance of the areola and nipple after surgery. Pigment is matched to your skin and applied with shading and detail so the result reads naturally rather than flat, and so both sides look balanced.

For many people this is the final step after reconstruction. It is not a beauty appointment, and we do not treat it like one.

Who it is for

  • After a single or double mastectomy, with or without reconstruction
  • After breast reconstruction where the areola was not preserved
  • After breast reduction, lift or augmentation, where colour, shape or symmetry has changed
  • Where an existing areola tattoo has faded, discoloured or lost definition
  • Scarring around the areola or along the surgical line, treated with camouflage work

Before you book

Timing matters more here than anywhere else in our work. Skin needs to be fully healed and settled before pigment goes in, and that usually means a minimum of twelve months after your final surgery, though your surgeon's advice comes first. If you are still healing, still having procedures, or partway through radiation treatment, we will ask you to wait. We would rather delay you than compromise your result or your skin.

We will ask for your surgeon's clearance where it is relevant. If you have had radiation therapy to the area, tell us at consultation, because it changes how skin holds pigment and how we plan the work.

The process

  1. Consultation. A private assessment of the area, your skin, your surgical history and what a realistic result looks like for you. We agree colour, size, placement and symmetry together.
  2. First session. Pigment is applied and built up gradually. Your first session also tells us how your skin takes colour, which makes the plan more accurate.
  3. Review and refinement. A follow-up session, usually around six weeks later, to adjust tone, depth and detail once the first application has healed and settled.

Your privacy

Every appointment is one-to-one in a private treatment room, with the door closed and no walk-in traffic. You are never rushed and never on display. We do not publish images of this work on our website or social media. If you want to see examples of previous areola work before deciding, ask at your consultation or by email and we will share a private, consented portfolio with you directly.

Sensation and comfort

Sensation in reconstructed or grafted tissue varies enormously. Some clients feel very little and others feel more than they expect, particularly along the scar line. We check in with you throughout, and you can stop at any point.

Results vary. Suitability depends on how your skin has healed, your surgical history, radiation history, skin type and aftercare. Pigment fades over time and periodic refresh sessions are normal. We improve appearance and symmetry; we do not restore sensation or recreate tissue. Final suitability and pricing are confirmed at your in-person consultation.
